public utility
An organization that provides resources or services considered essential for the public good. Typical examples of public utilities include (i) electricity, gas, and water supplies, (ii) refuse collection, (iii) postal services, and (iv) certain forms of transport. Public utilities often enjoy government-sanctioned * monopoly rights.
