audit trail

audit trail
An information flow that allows an auditor to trace the evolution of a transaction. The chronological evolution of a transaction originates in its underlying activity (e.g., an inventory movement, or a sale to a customer), and a satisfactory audit trail is in place if the *audit evidence of the transaction can be viewed in its entirety through to the *general ledger. The verification of audit trails is important in both *substantive and *compliance testing. *Walk-through tests (a form of compliance testing) specifically focus on the adequacy of audit trails.
