balance Sheet
An accounting summary of the financial position of an organization or individual at a specific date. A balance sheet offers a snapshot of *assets, liabilities, and *equity, and it sets out the results of the *accounting equation of *double entry bookkeeping. Under most systems of *Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, balance sheets are based on *historical costs and, therefore, are unlikely to reflect the *fair market value of an organization’s assets. Along with an *income statement, the balance sheet is prepared from a *trial balance: The balance sheet and income statement are the primary elements of *financial statements.
