benchmarking

benchmarking
The comparison of data or operations against those of similar organizations. Benchmarking, whether *quantitative or *qualitative, is often performed with the intention of seeking ways to improve an organization’s operations. Auditors also frequently use benchmarking as part of their *analytical review procedures. For example, an industry average of payroll cost per employee is a common benchmark to assess the reasonableness of payroll costs in a specific organization. The *Global Auditing Information Network of the *Institute of Internal Auditors offers benchmarking information at the level of the *internal audit function.
