environmental auditing
The auditing of an organization’s adherence to environmental laws, regulations, and best practices. This branch of auditing assesses the impact of an organization’s activities on the environment, in areas such as the following: (i) pollution levels, (ii) the handling of waste, and (iii) health and safety considerations for employees and the wider community. Environmental auditing increased in importance in the late twentieth century, alongside a general increase in environmental awareness.
