extrapolation

extrapolation
The extension of trends indicated by a *sample of data to an entire *population of data. For example, if 10 percent of a representative sample of *accounts receivable balances exceeds agreed *credit limits, an auditor may assume that 10 percent of the entire accounts receivable balances exceed their credit limits. Caution must be exercised in extrapolating the results of any sample, however, owing to *sampling risk. Compare interpolation.
