General Accounting Office
GAO The auditing, evaluation, and investigative arm of the U.S. Congress. The GAO was founded in 1921, and its Web site states that it "exists to support the Congress in meeting its Constitutional responsibilities and to help improve the performance and ensure the accountability of the federal government for the American people." It also states that the GAO "examines the use of public funds, evaluates federal programs and activities, and provides analyses, options, recommendations, and other assistance to help the Congress make effective oversight, policy, and funding decisions." Headquartered in Washington, DC, the GAO issues *Government Auditing Standards - popularly known as the Yellow Book. Many of the GAO’s audit reports are available online from its Web site.
