base rate
1. An *interest rate used for reference or comparative purposes. 2. A term used in the United Kingdom (and in some other countries with strong British influence) for the *interest lending rate set by a *central bank. Base rates are used as a control mechanism for a national economy, and commercial banks calculate their lending rates in line with national base rates.
